Open Access Publication of the Month – Aytekin Demirci (IAS-9) et al.

21 September 2023

To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In the open access publication of the month for September 2023, Aytekin Demirci (IAS-9) et al. write about statistical analysis of dislocation dynamics simulations.

Crystalline solids (for instance metals) contain defects, such as line defects known as dislocations. These defects form a complex network in which individual dislocations attract or repel each other. This movement drives irreversible (plastic) deformation. Discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations predict the trajectories of interacting dislocations and are important tools for understanding the mechanisms behind the plastic deformation of crystalline solids.

In the study, Demirci et al. employed their own in-house code – "discrete-to-continuous" (D2C) – to generate continuous field variables based on discrete dislocations structures. This enabled data mining and comparative analyses of DDD simulations, allowing them to analyse the effects of certain dislocation mechanisms on the microstructure evolution. This work establishes a methodology for descriptive statistics for systems of curved dislocations using physics-based descriptors, which are also features that can be used for machine learning.

The open access publication entitled "Statistical analysis of discrete dislocation dynamics simulations: initial structures, cross-slip and microstructure evolution" was published in the journal Modelling and simulation in materials science and engineering.
