Open Access Publication of the Month – Prof. Dr. Ulf-G. Meißner (IAS-4) et al.

10 May 2023

To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In the latest open access publication of the month, Johann Haidenbauer (IAS-4), Ulf-G. Meißner (University of Bonn & IAS-4), Andreas Nogga (IAS-4), and Hoai Le (IAS-4) write about a new precise calculation of the interaction between hyperons and nucleons, which is of relevance for the fields of nuclear physics and astrophysics.

The hyperon–nucleon interaction has been the subject of scrutiny in various fields of physics recently. A hyperon is a strongly interacting particle that contains one strange quark in addition to light up and down quarks. At sufficiently high densities, such as in the interior of neutron stars, it becomes energetically favourable to convert neutrons to neutral hyperons like the Lambda or the Sigma. This results in a softening of the equation of state of the neutron star and strongly influences the established mass–radius relation of these objects, which play an important role in the generation of gravitational waves. It is thus crucially important to gain a better understanding of the hyperon–nucleon interaction. This task is complicated by the observation that hyperons are instable and therefore cannot be produced as beams or targets. Their interactions are thus revealed indirectly via final-state interactions in decays of heavier particles or the characteristics of hypernuclei, where one hyperon is added to the neutrons and protons that make up conventional nuclei.

In this paper, a big step forward was made in constructing a precise hyperon–nucleon potential that will be used in hypernuclear physics as well as in studies of the equation of state of neutron stars.

The open access publication entitled “Hyperon–nucleon interaction in chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order” was published in The European physical journal A.
