Open Access Publication of the Month – Dr. Oleksandr Stroyuk (IEK-11) et al.
9 March 2023
To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.
In the open access publication of the month, Dr. Oleksandr Stroyuk, Cosima Güttler, Dr. Claudia Buerhop-Lutz, Dr. Jens Hauch, and Dr. Ian Marius Peters from Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (all HI ERN/IEK-11) write about a new non-contact method for the field identification of the backsheet type of silicon PV modules using UV-excited fluorescence imaging.
In recent years, the degradation of polymer components of Si PV modules – especially backsheets (BSs) and encapsulants – has been recognized as a factor determining the performance and lifetime of PV installations. Failures in polymers cause losses in the energy outcome of PV plants, and this deficiency increases with each year of exposure.
The publication of Dr. Oleksandr Stroyuk et al. introduces a new non-contact approach for the identification of the PV BS composition by analysing fluorescence images of PV encapsulants. The method is based on a database collected by HI ERN, which combines spectroscopic data on the BS structure with characteristic fluorescence patterns of corresponding PV modules. The method can be readily upscaled for high-throughput characterization by means of the automated recognition of images collected by a drone.
The open access publication entitled “Identification of the Backsheet Type of Silicon Photovoltaic Modules from Encapsulant Fluorescence Images” was published in the journal ACS Applied Energy Materials.
