Open Access Publication of the Month – Dr. Vlassis A. Karydis (IEK-8) et al.

12 March 2024

To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In the open access publication of the month for March, Alexandros Milousis, Alexandra P. Tsimpidi, Astrid Kiendler-Scharr, and Vlassis A. Karydis from IEK-8 and other authors write about a reliable and computationally efficient atmospheric aerosol thermodynamics module for Earth system models.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the newly developed aerosol thermodynamic module ISORROPIA-lite within the chemistry climate model EMAC. ISORROPIA-lite is more computationally efficient than its predecessor, ISORROPIA-II, and assumes that atmospheric aerosols always exist as supersaturated aqueous (metastable) solutions, while ISORROPIA-II allows the formation of solid salts at low relative humidity (RH) conditions (stable state).

The study examines the discrepancies between the two model versions in global atmospheric simulations of aerosol composition and acidity due to differences in aerosol phase state assumptions. Although local discrepancies were found in regions where the RH ranged from 20 % to 60 %, the results are similar on a global scale. Therefore, ISORROPIA-lite can be a reliable and computationally efficient alternative to ISORROPIA II in Earth system models.

The open access publication entitled “Implementation of the ISORROPIA-lite aerosol thermodynamics model into the EMAC chemistry climate model (based on MESSy v2.55): implications for aerosol composition and acidity” was published in the journal Geoscientific Model Development.
