Open Access Publication of the Month – Dr. Martin Müller (IEK-14) et al.
4 June 2024
To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.
In the open access publication of the month June 2024, Edward Rauls, Michael Hehemann, Fabian Scheepers, Martin Müller, Ralf Peters (all IEK-14) and Detlef Stolten (EK-3) write about the behaviour of a water electrolysis system with membrane technology in dynamic operation, as it arises when coupled with renewable energy sources.
In the future, water electrolysers that produce hydrogen will ensure energy security in energy systems based on fluctuating renewable energy sources. This month’s open access publication examines the effects of fluctuating energy production on the operation of polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysers.
Based on experiments using a 100 kWel test system, it was determined that operation at a constant temperature is not possible. Pressure control on the hydrogen side is more difficult than on the oxygen side. Slight pressure fluctuations occur during dynamic operation. Dynamic operation with wind power has a system efficiency of 73.70 %LHV, based on the lower heating value (LHV). Direct coupling with solar power achieves 71.90 %LHV. The authors propose adjustments to the electrolyser design and operating strategies for system optimization.
The open access publication entitled “System dynamics of polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzers and impact of renewable energy sources on systems design” appeared in the “International Journal of Hydrogen Energy”.
