Open Access Publication of the Month – Neville Magielse (INM-7) et al.

2 December 2025

To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In the open access publication of the month for December 2025, Magielse et al. report a behavioural map of the cerebellum using a novel meta-analytic approach that accounts for differences in how often each region is reported in the literature, refining and expanding our understanding of the cerebellum’s role across human behaviours.

The cerebellum, which has traditionally been associated with motor functions, is now recognized for its involvement in cognitive and emotional processes as well. This study provides a comprehensive meta-analytical view of the cerebellar areas that are involved in diverse cognitive and behavioural functions. It also addresses a long-standing methodological challenge in cerebellar meta-analyses: the spatial bias in the reported effects across the literature, which can skew our understanding of brain–behavior relationships. Through C-SALE, a new bias-accounting method of coordinate-based meta-analysis, the authors provide a more accurate and comprehensive map of diverse cerebellar functions that extend beyond motor control.

This work offers a more reliable framework for interpreting cerebellar activation patterns and their implications for behaviour. The findings are expected to inform future research in neuroscience and psychology, and may also be valuable for clinical applications, particularly in disorders linked to cerebellar dysfunction.

The open access publication entitled “A bias-accounting meta-analytic approach refines and expands the cerebellar behavioral topography” was published in the journal Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews (Volume 179, December 2025).
