Wissenschaft und Abenteuer - 2 Monate in Australien
Stefan Sanow war für 2 Monate in Melbourne, wo er im Rahmen der Jülich-Melbourne Postgraduate Academy (JUMPA) an der School of BioSciences, University of Melbourne arbeitete.

Although COVID-19 has affected all our lives in recent years, it was still possible for Stefan Sanow to travel to Melbourne, Australia for 2 months instead of the planned 12 months.
Australia, also known as ‘down-under’, is often associated with Kangaroos, Koalas and many venomous creatures. However, this is only partly true for the metropolis of Melbourne. Besides Kangaroos in the suburbs, there is no real threat from venomous animals within the city.
Melbourne is a magical city full of culture. Each district has its own charm: from a beautiful beach in St. Kilda to the iconic Flinders Street Station in the Central Business District to an alternative district called Brunswick. Everywhere are small restaurants, cafés or pubs with seating on the pavements, bringing the city to life. Ample green space has been provided between the skyscrapers, making for an excellent retreat.
Although two months is not enough time to fully experience Melbourne, there is much more to see in Australia. The Christmas and holiday season also left some time for adventure: sleeping under the stars at Uluru (Ayers Rock), Northern Territory, Australia. In the outback, swags are used for sleeping overnight, from which you can admire the starry sky without being disturbed by light pollution. Besides wonderful sunrises and sunsets, it was also possible to see various animals, including snakes, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, but also wild horses and wild dromedaries. Especially in the Northern Territory, one becomes aware of the tragic history of the traditional owners of the land.
Australia is an absolute travel recommendation with unique offers, diverse scenery and enough possibilities for adventures. I highly recommend an exchange year (not necessarily Australia), as it will change your perspective on many things.
