Titel: Bioeconomy Innovation Regions – From Global Targets to Regional Transformation
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schurr, Director IBG-2: Plant Sciences at Forschungszentrum Jülich
How can bioeconomy principles drive sustainable regional transformation? In this talk, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schurr explores the role of bioeconomy model regions in translating global sustainability goals into regional action. Using BioökonomieREVIER as a case study, he illustrates how innovation ecosystems, stakeholder collaboration, and structural change initiatives contribute to regional bioeconomic development in the Rhenish mining region. The presentation highlights the importance of regional strategies, technological advancements, and crosssectoral cooperation in fostering sustainable growth—positioning bioeconomy as a key driver of economic and environmental transformation.
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schurr is the Director of the Institute for Plant Sciences at Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, a world leader in plant phenotyping and quantitative plant research. He coordinates national, European, and global plant phenotyping networks and leads the Bioeconomy Science Center, the largest European research network on sustainable bioeconomy. Through BioökonomieREVIER, he initiated a pioneering model region for sustainable and circular bioeconomy in the Rhenish mining region, supporting the transformation of a coal-phase-out region into a sustainable and circular bioeconomy. He is also a member of the International Advisory Council for Global Bioeconomy (IACGB).
