The control of seed germination
Seed dormancy and longevity determine germination and seedling establishment in the field. It has been known since several decades that dormancy and germination are regulated by the plant hormones abscisic acid and gibberellins. However, very little is known about other involved factors and about the molecular pathways regulating these traits. During the last few years several novel genes and proteins determining dormancy and germination have been identified, for a large part based on work with the model plant Arabidopsis. I will give an overview of our present knowledge of these different factors and show their roles in dormancy, longevity, and germination.
