Open Access Publication of the Month – Manpreet Singh Jattana (JSC) et al.

Open-Access-Publikation des Monats – Dr. Stephan Noack (IBG-1) et al.

20 July 2022

To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In the open access publication of the month, Manpreet Singh Jattana, Fengping Jin, Hans De Raedt, and Kristel Michielsen (all JSC), write about variational algorithms as potential applications for quantum computing.

Using a massively parallel quantum computer emulator, the authors assess the potential of hybrid quantum-classical algorithms for future quantum computers. The aim was to find the ground state energy of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. They emulated up to 36 qubits, which required about 8,000,000,000,000 classical bits (0s and 1s) on the JUWELS booster. They found that a certain degree of success is possible if the variational algorithms are correctly configured to the problem.

The open access publication, which is entitled "Assessment of the Variational Quantum Eigensolver: Application to the Heisenberg Model", was published in the journal Frontiers in Physics.
