Open Access Publication of the Month – Stanley Risch (IEK-3) et al.

15 September 2022

To encourage us all to broaden our horizons, each month the Central Library selects one open access publication from the JuSER publications portal to be featured in the newsletter of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

In the open access publication of the month, Stanley Risch, Rachel Maier, and a number of other authors from IEK-3 write about the potentials of renewable energy carriers in Germany and evaluate the influence of different input data sets.

In the publication, regional high-resolution data sets on the potentials of renewable energy sources were created. With the aid of input data that classify different land uses with a high level of accuracy, various scenarios for onshore wind power, offshore wind power, and open-field photovoltaics are developed based on the suitability of the land. In addition, 3D building data are used to calculate the rooftop photovoltaic potential for each individual building in Germany. The results of the potential analyses can be viewed in an open access database.

As preliminary work in the publication, the suitability of different land-use data sets was investigated and the impact on potential calculations quantified.

The open access publication entitled “Potentials of Renewable Energy Sources in Germany and the Influence of Land Use Datasets” was published in the journal Energies.
