Advancing Open and Big-team Reproducible Science through Increased Representation – The Creation of ABRIRs – with Dr. Alma Jeftic and Dr. Nadia Saraí Corral-Frías – Jülich Open Science Speaker Series (JOSSS)
This lecture by Dr. Alma Jeftic (University of Copenhagen) and Dr. Nadia Saraí Corral-Frías (Universidad de Sonora) is intended to introduce the concept of Big Team Science. It will also discuss the need for the active inclusion of Global South scientists in leadership roles.

Abstract
The Global North dominates science across most fields. A clear example of how problematic this is can be found in psychological science where it’s argued that it hinders the creation of generalizable theories (IJzerman et al., 2020). There is also a moral imperative to research psychological phenomena that affects the Global South. Big Team Science is a way to replace dominance with cooperation whereby extremely large groups of researchers, spanning the entire globe, work together to address key questions. Yet even in this setting, the Global North continues to dominate.
In response we have created Advancing Big-team Reproducible Science through Increased Representation (ABRIR). This presentation will describe the mission and vision of ABRIR, the current state of open science in the Global South, and will emphasize the role of bridge researchers* in establishing more inclusive and reproducible psychological science.
This lecture will describe the mission and vision of ABRIR, the current state of open science in the Global South, and will emphasize the role of “bridge” researchers in establishing more inclusive and reproducible psychological science (“bridge” researchers - those who have spent significant periods in both the Global South and the Global North).

Why join this Lecture?
This lecture is intended to introduce the concept of Big Team Science. It will also discuss the need for the active inclusion of Global South scientists in leadership roles. As such it will be relevant both to researchers from the Global South and to researchers from the Global North interested in integrating researchers from the Global South and exploring a greater diversty of ideas.
About our Speaker
Dr. Alma Jeftic has expertise in quantitative methods and social psychology. She is a Postdoc at the University of Copenhagen and a Research Fellow at the Peace Research Institute, International Christian University in Tokyo. Dr. Jeftic has conducted basic and applied research throughout her career and has published widely in social psychology, peacebuilding, trauma, and well-being. As part of her PhD project, she developed a statistical procedure to measure memory bias, while conducting an extensive study on hard-to-reach populations in postwar settings. She is a co-founder at ABRIR, the first consortium of psychological science researchers from the Global South. Dr. Jeftic published her first book on the social aspects of memory (Routledge) which completing her PhD. Her interests in bridging basic and applied research, replicability, equity, and inclusion are also in line with her additional engagements as a Chair of the Student and Early Career Committee of the APA Division 48 (peace psychology), and as a member of the IDEA (Identity, Diversity, Equity, and Access) Committee at the Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science.
Dr. Nadia Saraí Corral-Frías is Associate Professor at the University of Sonora (Mexico). She completed her undergraduate degree with honors in psychology at Instituto de Estudios Superiores del Occidente. She went on to the University of Arizona and earned a degree in Neuroscience. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship (funded by the US National Institutes of Health) at Washington University in Saint Louis studying the neurogenetics of stress-related psychiatric disorders. Her cross-species research investigating the biopsychosocial risk and protective factors of stress-related psychopathology has been published in well-regarded journals. She is Assistant Director in the Psychological Science Accelerator (PSA), founder of Advancing Big-team Reproducible science through Increased Representation (ABRIR), co-chair of the MDD workgroup of the Latin American Genomics Consortium (LAGC) and a faculty advisor of the first Mexican PsiChi Chapter. She is a proponent of increasing diversity in science and prides herself in her outreach activities.

How to join?
The Series will use a hybrid format where our speakers talk directly in front of a live audience as well as be telecast via Zoom. This format was selected to minimize barriers to participation.
The speaker series takes place at Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library. You can also attend online via Zoom. The lectures will be recorded and made public afterwards.
If you intend to participate in-person please write additionally a mail to: m.gonzalez-marquez@fz-juelich.de
We look forward to seeing you there!
Jülich Open Science Speaker Series
Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library (ZB) invites all scientists at Jülich, Helmholtz and our international guests to join the conversation on current developments in Open Science.
Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library (ZB)
“We‘re implementing a theory driven open science practice at Jülich. This is both challenging and very exciting, as we move towards providing researchers at Jülich with a cohesive vision of how open science can benefit their scientific work as well as society at large,” says Monica Gonzalez-Marquez, who is responsible for the planning and implementation of open science activities of Jülich’s Central Library.
