Abstract

Large publishing houses use their digital platforms to track user behaviour, although it is unclear to what end. A possible clue might be found, for example, in Elsevier rebranding itself as “a global leader in information and analytics”. Growing concern about these practices has led to increasing efforts to protect the data privacy of users, as highlighted by the recent negotiations with Project DEAL and the three largest publishers for Germany – Elsevier, Wiley, and Springer Nature.

In this presentation Dr. Mittermaier will:

  • discuss the legal situation with regard to tracking and other privacy issues,
  • comment on the regulations in the DEAL contracts, and
  • provide guidance to scientists and librarians on how to address these issues.

Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library (ZB)

“We‘re implementing a theory driven open science practice at Jülich. This is both challenging and very exciting, as we move towards providing researchers at Jülich with a cohesive vision of how open science can benefit their scientific work as well as society at large,” says Monica Gonzalez-Marquez, who is responsible for the planning and implementation of open science activities of Jülich’s Central Library.
