Abstract
Trust in science and research is paramount yet often challenged by questionable research practices. Open Science reforms seek to bolster this trust by advocating for greater transparency, reliability, and reproducibility in research. While grassroots initiatives have been pivotal in driving these reforms, a broader, more coordinated effort is necessary to achieve lasting change in the research landscape.
The German Reproducibility Network (GRN) is a strategic, interdisciplinary initiative designed to foster systemic change toward Open Science in Germany. It serves as a collaborative platform, connecting grassroots movements, research institutions, funding agencies, policymakers, and publishers. By facilitating cooperation among these stakeholders, the GRN promotes transparent research practices and seeks to embed them within the research system. It seeks to provide long-term links with international networks like the UK Reproducibility Network to strengthen global transparency efforts. This talk will explore the GRN’s strategic goals, and its role in driving change toward Openness within the research community.

Why join this presentation?
This talk by Dr. Rima-Maria Rahal (member of the Steering Committee of the German Reproducibility Network) is relevant to everyone interested in understanding how different stakeholders are collaborating to build a solid foundation for Open Science in Germany.
About our speaker
Dr. Rima-Maria Rahal studied psychology in Heidelberg and Amsterdam, and received her PhD from Leiden University for her dissertation on the cognitive foundations of decisions in social and moral dilemmas, which she worked on at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn. Following positions in Frankfurt, Tilburg, and an interim professorship in Heidelberg, she is now back at the Bonn MPI, working on cross-cultural perspectives on higher-order cognition and serving as the institute’s Open Science Ambassador. She is an alumna of the Wikimedia fellowship Freies Wissen, in the scope of which she developed an open online course on the methodological basics of scientific experimentation, incorporating open science practices. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the German Reproducibility Network, representing the Network of Open Science Initiatives (NOSI).

How to join?
The Series will use a hybrid format where our speakers talk directly in front of a live audience as well as be telecast via Zoom. This format was selected to minimize barriers to participation.
The speaker series takes place at Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library. You can also attend online via Zoom. The lectures will be recorded and made public afterwards.
If you intend to participate in-person please write additionally a mail to: m.gonzalez-marquez@fz-juelich.de
We look forward to seeing you there!
Jülich Open Science Speaker Series
Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library (ZB) invites all scientists at Jülich, Helmholtz and our international guests to join the conversation on current developments in Open Science.

“We‘re implementing a theory driven open science practice at Jülich. This is both challenging and very exciting, as we move towards providing researchers at Jülich with a cohesive vision of how open science can benefit their scientific work as well as society at large,” says Monica Gonzalez-Marquez, who is responsible for the planning and implementation of open science activities of Jülich’s Central Library.
