Alignments and Tensions between Qualitative Methods and Open Science – with Dr. Crystal Steltenpohl – Jülich Open Science Speaker Series (JOSSS)

This lecture by Dr. Crystal Steltenpohl (Center for Open Science) will discuss the relationship between Open Science and Qualitative Data, with a focus on how it compares to Quantitative Data. The topic is important given how much Qualitative Data impacts our daily lives in, for example, medicine and public policy.

Abstract

Open Science conversations have tended to focus on quantitative methodologies, while largely ignoring qualitative research.  This is unfortunate given the important role that qualitative research plays in knowledge building across many disciplines, from climate change to medicine to cognitive science. That said, there is growing attention to - and literature about - how Open Science may align (or not) with qualitative methodologies. In this lecture, Dr. Steltenpohl will describe how Open Science practices can increase the transparency of qualitative methodologies, and explore their alignment (or lack thereof) with quantitative methodologies. She will also suggest a few qualitative practices that Open Science may be interested in adapting to their own research practices.

About our Speaker

Dr. Crystal Steltenpohl is the Training and Education Manager at the Center for Open Science, spearheading initiatives to build awareness and skills in open scholarship through training and education. As a community psychologist, Steltenpohl is passionate about improving individual and community well-being. Her goal as a mixed methods researcher is to use the best methods to ask the right questions and find feasible action steps.

Within open science, Dr. Steltenpohl has been particularly interested in encouraging open science advocates to have deeper conversations about what transparency and rigor mean, who we are being transparent with, and what assumptions are embedded within our conceptions of rigor. To this end, she is a founding member of Quala Lab, a collaboratively-run working group that works to find connections between the open science movement and qualitative and mixed methods research.

Dr. Steltenpohl has also worked in international contexts to improve scientific processes and disseminate research to diverse audiences through organizations like the Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science, the Psychological Science Accelerator, and the Framework for Open and Reproducible Research Training. She obtained her bachelor’s in English and Psychology at the University of Southern Indiana in 2011, her master’s in applied psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2013, and her PhD in community psychology from DePaul University in 2017.

How to join?

The Series will use a hybrid format where our speakers talk directly in front of a live audience as well as be telecast via Zoom. This format was selected to minimize barriers to participation.

The speaker series takes place at Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library. You can also attend online via Zoom. The lectures will be recorded and made public afterwards.

If you intend to participate in-person please write additionally a mail to: m.gonzalez-marquez@fz-juelich.de

We look forward to seeing you there!

Jülich Open Science Speaker Series

Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library (ZB) invites all scientists at Jülich, Helmholtz and our international guests to join the conversation on current developments in Open Science.

Forschungszentrum Jülich’s Central Library (ZB)

“We‘re implementing a theory driven open science practice at Jülich. This is both challenging and very exciting, as we move towards providing researchers at Jülich with a cohesive vision of how open science can benefit their scientific work as well as society at large,” says Monica Gonzalez-Marquez, who is responsible for the planning and implementation of open science activities of Jülich’s Central Library.
