The long-term effect of rice lateral root types on drought recovery and yield

Minimizing the yield gab, caused by diseases and pest as well as nutrient deficiencies or drought, is one of the main goals in agricultural plant production. The increasing world population and decreasing amount of fertile land leads to a necessity to detect, among others, drought resistant genotypes to insure future food production.

This PhD project aims to gain a deeper understanding of drought tolerance and its effect on yield by analysing rice under repeated drought and rewetting scenarios. To identify an ideotypic root system that produces the most stable yield under repeated dry-wet cycles a simulation model of the rice roots system will be implemented to test multiple scenarios.
