Although farmers’ associations (FA) play an important role in agricultural knowledge and innovation systems (AKIS), this has hardly been explored in the context of the bioeconomy. The inter- and transdisciplinary project FABIOS investigates to what extent FA in NRW and Argentina have taken up and implemented the concept of a sustainable bioeconomy, how they do this within existing innovation systems, and how these systems could be adapted to ensure sustainable innovations that are also socially accepted. In a participatory approach, important agricultural organizations in NRW and Argentina as well as players from the bio-industrial and R&D sectors will be involved to identify potential innovations that can contribute to the development of a sustainable bioeconomy.
