Investigating chitinase-like proteins in the "CodeChi" project

The Gohlke group at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) will be involved in the new CodeChi research project. This project focuses on chitin, a widespread polysaccharide of interest for many biological and medical fields of application. The Gohlke group will study the molecular factors governing chitin recognition by chitinase-like proteins. In addition, the influence of disease-relevant processes linked to a misregulation of endogenous chitinase expression is to be investigated. This project, involving various working groups including the universities of Siegen, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Münster and Tübingen, and the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, has been funded with 430,000 euros by the DFG and is part of the priority program SPP 2416. The main objective of this collaborative work is to research how chitin can be chemically modified in such a way that it is accepted by the body and how it can be used in medicine in the future.
