A data infrastructure for complex data from plant research

The "DataPLANT" project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and aims to develop a data infrastructure for complex data from plant research. The project with participation of Prof. B. Usadel started on October 1st, 2020.

Faster and higher-resolution technologies coupled with better computers and more intelligent analysis approaches, are producing large amounts of comprehensive scientific plant data sets. However, keeping track of immense quantities of data from various scientific areas, generated by various techniques, becomes challenging. The large-scale, complex data sets obtained in today's research, make it difficult to establish and recognize relationships or patterns and to interpret results. Therefore, a common data infrastructure for the field of plant research is being developed in the project DataPLANT in a collaborative effort between scientists from a wide range of research institues. Here, data will be collected, revised, adjusted and visualized using built-in methods. The resulting data infrastructure will be accessible and usable for everyone.

DataPLANT im Rahmen der Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI)

Under the direction of Prof. Björn Usadel, the Bioinformatics department (IBG-4) is involved in the DataPLANT consortium funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), which officially began its work on October 1st, 2020. The German Research Foundation (DFG) initially funds the “DataPLANT” research network for 5 years with a total of almost 10 million euros. DataPLANT will provide a sustainable, user-oriented infrastructure that is coordinated and embedded in the overarching NFDI activities. DataPLANT is coordinated by the University of Freiburg and managed by the Universities of Tuebingen and Kaiserslautern and the Jülich Research Center.

Further partners are institutes and universities in Berlin, Bielefeld, Bochum, Düsseldorf, Hohenheim, Konstanz, Munich and Potsdam.
