PREBreed Modern Breeding Research for Climate- and Site-Adapted Crops of Tomorrow

The PREBreed project is a highly interdisciplinary project that brings together academic and industry partners from the fields of genetics, (functional) genomics, modelling, bioinformatics, data management, physiology and breeding to underpin previously generated barley pangenome resources with in-depth functional annotation.

Specifically, the functional annotation of the pangenome will be used to identify the genomic plasticity of root development and its impact on environmental adaptation and sustainable crop production, thus defining new targets for plant breeding. The project will largely build on previous BMBF-funded research of the co-operation partners and extend the already established barley genome resources to link complex genomic diversity with functional information. This will make the extensive information more usable for societal requirements and customised breeding solutions. The combined knowledge will serve as a basis for more sustainable barley cultivation and better environmental adaptation to increase the climate resilience of our future barley crops.
