In order to sustain nutrition of a growing world population and at the same time save fertilizer and water input into agricultural systems we have to look under the soil surface and investigate roots. By understanding natural possibilities of resource efficiency or even resistance to nutritional deficiencies we can identify useful traits and possibly shed light on underlying molecular mechanisms.
During my PhD at the Universities of Tübingen and Bonn I worked on root hair formation on maize roots, in particular the genetic and molecular dissection of their development by characterizing mutants defective in root hair production. Thereafter I joined a lab in Japan investigating rice roots in response to nutrient stresses enabled by a Post-Doc scholarship. Within this project I concentrated on physiological responses of rice roots to soil conditions, mainly P deficiency. Returning to Germany, I joined the newly formed root dynamics group of IBG-2 at Forschungszentrum Jülich in April of 2016. After investigating root and root hair development in maize and rice my research focus is now on sorghum roots in response to abtiotic stress environments. This project is mainly related to insufficient water supply and how different genotypes respond to this stress situation. I am interested in physiological responses in terms of natural variation in root system growth and its composition, as well as mechanistic and molecular basics of these reactions.
