Emperor Augustus from the 3D Printer
Jülich, 22 January 2016 – Forschungszentrum Jülich is helping the Zitadelle Museum in Jülich and several archaeologists and historians from the Euregio region to reconstruct an incomplete antique bust of the Roman emperor Augustus. Only the rear portion of the roughly twelve-centimetre-high sculpture dating from the first century AD was found close to Stolberg, near Aachen, in the nineteenth century. Using a scanner and a 3D printer, Dr.-Ing. Dietrich Faidel from Jülich's Central Institute of Engineering, Electronics and Analytics (ZEA) has now manufactured a detailed replica of the historical find from plastic.
