Forschungszentrum Jülich is a knowledge factory. Through our work, we push the boundaries of knowledge and establish the basis for new applications. Our expertise is in high demand and is put to use in a variety of ways. For instance, we are supporting structural change in the Rhenish mining area, helping to drive the energy transition, and working on the information technology of tomorrow.
From data to knowledge to insight
Research is not an end in itself, which is why we make our knowledge available to society. Two impressive examples of this are the three-dimensional digital atlas of the human brain, which Jülich researchers helped to create as part of the Human Brain Project, and the LAION data set, which is one of the largest freely accessible data sets for the development of independent AI models.
But research data are also produced in less spectacular projects, and the systematic management of these data provides an indispensable basis for our scientific work. Making these data available creates transparency and enables it to be used by third parties.
Software is changing science. We can now tackle problems that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
We are aware of the huge significance of software in science and are working to establish a research software engineering (RSE) network that aims to raise awareness about the relevance of scientific software.
Frequently quoted and asked as an expert
Jülich researchers are among the most frequently cited scientists in the world. This underlines their considerable influence on discourse in their fields. But they also make an important contribution to shaping public opinion, whether as reviewers, authors, or advisors to policy-makers.
For example, Jülich researchers were involved in the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change regarding the consequences of climate change. Our leading scientists are also involved in committees and councils such as the German Ethics Council and the Council of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
