Researchers in Helmholtz Earth and Environment are investigating and measuring our planet, environment, and atmosphere. They collect data and facts about the soil under our feet, the air we breathe, the atmosphere that protects us, and the nature that nourishes and surrounds us. They monitor rivers, clouds, air and water currents, land surfaces, and forests; travel the oceans; dispatch experts to far-off polar regions; and send measuring instruments into space via satellite. In doing so, they also take a fresh look at nature’s toolbox, the diversity of renewable resources, and the possibilities offered by biotechnology.
The researchers use their findings to develop knowledge-based solutions and robust forecast models. With these strategies, they are paving the way for a sustainable use of natural resources and a circular bioeconomy, and providing society and politics with concrete recommendations for action.
Jülich scientists help us to gain a deeper understanding of our atmosphere and our soil, mitigate climate change, and avoid air pollution. They collect and analyse information that enable adaptation strategies to be developed to counteract the consequences of climate change in a targeted manner. At the same time, they work on solutions for establishing a sustainable bioeconomy in order to use the Earth’s resources more efficiently and protect them in the long term.
