Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain, Droughts:
MOSES Measurement Campaign on Weather Extremes

Jülich, 4 May 2021 – Extreme weather events such as strong thunderstorms, hail, and periods of hot weather have increased in Germany in recent years, sometimes causing major economic and infrastructural damage. The MOSES Helmholtz initiative, which includes scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich, studies the complex physical processes involved in the occurrence of these weather events. The objective of the new “Swabian MOSES” measurement campaign is to investigate the causes, impacts, and interactions of hydrometeorological extremes in a holistic manner. In the study region in Baden-Württemberg, thunderstorms as well as periods of hot weather and drought occur frequently.
