Strengthened cooperation between CEA and FZJ on artificial intelligence, data analysis and simulation

Jülich/ Paris 24. June 2021 - An agreement between Forschungszentrum Jülich and CEA Paris strengthens their cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), data analysis and scalable simulation. To this end, François Jacq, General Administrator for the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and Prof. Marquardt signed an Implementing Agreement on the Joint Virtual Lab AIDAS that runs until end of 2024.

AIDAS aims to advance simulation in Europe by bringing together partners' expertise in numerics around AI, quantum computing and high-performance computing. So far, around 70 scientists are represented in AIDAS, and the lab is led by Christophe Calvin and France Boillod-Cerneux from the CEA and Prof. Thomas Lippert and Prof. Kristel Michielsen from the Jülich Supercomputing Centre.

AIDAS will develop scalable and optimized application codes in selected scientific fields, explore the potential benefits of new and future computer architectures, and promote the synergetic interdisciplinary development and use of generic methods and algorithms for exascale computing. In addition, attractive programming and user environments will be developed. AIDAS strengthens the position of CEA and FZJ at European level and thus will have an impact on institutions in other EU member states.

The CEA and the research center have already been cooperating for a long time in the field of high-performance computing (HPC), both in HPC-based application fields and in the development of cutting-edge HPC technologies in Europe.

Mr. François Jacq and Prof. Marquardt are looking forward to the implementation of AIDAS with a long-standing partner. The agreement is an important step in the construction of AIDAS, the first milestone towards a large digital laboratory.
