Foundation Stone Laid For European Spallation Source (ESS)
Lund/Jülich, 9 October 2014 - The foundation stone of the European Spallation Station (ESS) was laid on 9 October in Lund, Sweden. The ESS, which will be the world’s most powerful neutron source, represents a new generation of sources and does not require nuclear fission. Other institutions also currently contributing to this large-scale European project alongside Forschungszentrum Jülich include Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Technische Universität München, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY). The first neutrons are expected in 2019, and the first experiments are due to begin in 2023.
