Jülich ExpertiseFine dust: improved measurements, targeted reduction

Jülich, 22 January 2016 – On Monday, fine dust warnings were issued for the first time in a German city. Stuttgart has appealed to all citizens to leave their cars at home and not to use certain types of open fires. According to the media, the response is not very encouraging. "In order to reduce pollution like that in Stuttgart, atmospheric researchers must identify more specifically who is responsible for what level of fine dust. A lot remains to be done," says Prof. Astrid Kindler-Scharr from the Institute of Energy and Climate Research at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Her research concerns physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere.
