When the Brain is Deprived of Energy
Jülich, 28 September 2018 – If the oxygen and nutrient supply to the brain is compromised – for example due to a stroke – this results in irreversible damage to the nerve cells after only a very short time. The new research unit “Synapses under stress” involving scientists from Bochum, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Jülich, Münster, and Twente is focusing on the processes that occur immediately after a shortage in supply. Neurobiologist Prof. Dr. Christine Rose from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) is spokesperson for the project, which is being funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with approximately € 2 million. The project’s deputy spokesperson is from Forschungszentrum Jülich: Prof. Christoph Fahlke from the Institute of Complex Systems – Cellular Biophysics.
