Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year

This year’s Christmas card from Forschungszentrum Jülich offers an insight into Jülich atmosphere research.

The picture is of a measurement campaign involving helium balloons in Kiruna, northern Sweden. At this location, the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Stratosphere (IEK-7) investigates CFCs and “super” greenhouse gases in the stratosphere (i.e. over 10 km above ground). This involves researchers releasing balloons with a diameter of up to 100 metres and a basket weighing up to 800 kilograms into the night sky.
