Join in, marvel, understand: experiencing science in Jülich

8 September 2025

More than 20,000 curious guests flocked to the nearly two-square-kilometer grounds of Forschungszentrum Jülich last Sunday. For Open Day, one of Europe's largest research sites opened its doors and offered exciting insights into science and technology.

More than 60 institutes presented over 250 program items showing how research can help to master the great challenges of our time. The topics ranged from artificial intelligence and quantum computing to climate research and the energy transition. Numerous scientists patiently answered questions and explained the significance of their work for our daily lives.

Hands-on Science

There were numerous hands-on activities especially for children and young people, clearly summarized in a separate program booklet. Whether launching weather balloons, exploring plant growth in the greenhouse, or diving into a giant inflatable brain, young visitors were able to experience science up close. Many stations invited visitors to try things out – the plant fire department explained how fires are extinguished, and at the photo wall, visitors could take souvenir photos in cleanroom suits or with the mascot Dr. JuFox.

The “Future Me” activity was also popular, with over 1,400 young guests taking a virtual journey into their own future in Science. The Rainbow Network created 400 colorful buttons.
