Official statement by Forschungszentrum Jülich on the AVR Expert Group report

Forschungszentrum Jülich would like to thank the AVR Expert Group for its committed and competent review of the operating history of AVR.

After evaluating numerous sources, the experts confirmed that the operation of the AVR experimental reactor presented no radiological hazards to either humans or the environment. However, the experts’ report shows that serious errors and omissions were committed in the past, in part by Forschungszentrum Jülich. We find this very regrettable.

The experts showed us that rules of good scientific practice were not always upheld while the AVR reactor was in operation. These rules have since been laid down in the form of written guidelines for Forschungszentrum Jülich for over ten years. Nevertheless, we regard the experts’ results as a reminder that we must remain critical of our own research and ensure transparency in our work.
