Germany at the Heart of Europe’s Energy Transition

30. Oktober 2024

The goal of the European Green Deal is to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. The EU member states have committed to the energy transition and to achieving this goal. A team from Forschungszentrum Jülich's Institute of Climate and Energy Systems – Jülich Systems Analysis has investigated how this can be achieved. In a study with high temporal and spatial resolution, they show how Europe can best exploit its potential. The study reveals a number of important findings, including the fact that nuclear power will only have a role to play if investment costs fall significantly. In addition, global hydrogen imports will only become more significant if there is a sluggish expansion of renewables and grid capacities – or if import prices of less than € 3 per kilogram can be expected in the short term.
