On 12 December 2015, the Paris Climate Agreement was adopted at the UN Climate Change Conference – a milestone for global climate protection. On its tenth anniversary, we show how Jülich’s climate research is contributing to achieving the Paris climate targets.

The celebration of 10 years of the Paris Agreement reminds us that tackling global warming is a shared responsibility. Fortunately, while populists may choose to deny scientific evidence that climate change is real with human activity as a main cause, a rapid transition to an energy supply system based on renewable and clean sources is the only feasible path forward to keep energy affordable, to improve economic competitiveness, and to reach energy independence for Germany and Europe. Energy transition is not just about protecting the world we live in – it is about securing our health, our wealth, and our way of living.
Science on climate change
The goal of the Paris Climate Agreement is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees if possible and to strive for greenhouse gas neutrality by the second half of the century. Ten years later, it is clear that although much has been achieved, there is still a long way to go to reach the global climate targets. It is therefore all the more important to conduct rigorous energy and climate research that accurately assesses climate change developments, provides guidance, and delivers insights for developing effective solutions for climate neutrality. Researchers at Forschungszentrum Jülich have been contributing to this for many years.
Our scientists research the processes that determine our climate both today and in the future. These include complex chemical interactions in the atmosphere, pathways toward a renewable energy supply and intelligently networked energy systems, a sustainable bioeconomy, and the safeguarding of water resources. Our research helps to continuously improve our understanding of the climate, classify developments, assess risks, and identify options for a climate-friendly future – insights that decision-makers in politics, business, and society need in order to devise measures that align with climate targets.
Interview with systems researcher Prof. Dr. Jochen Linßen: Where do we stand today in terms of climate targets?

Dr. Jochen Linßen, head of Jülich Systems Analysis at the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems (ICE-2), investigating how Germany and Europe can transform their energy systems without losing sight of energy security, economic efficiency, or the environment.
To mark the tenth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement, we spoke to Jochen Linßen. Where do we stand today, what options are on the table, and what will it take for Germany and Europe to actually achieve the energy transition?
Jülich experts on energy and climate research
Numerous experts at Forschungszentrum Jülich contribute to various issues in climate research at a national and international level. An initial selection of their research topics and priorities can be found on our Experts page and in the selected examples on this page.
