What is presented?
In her lecture, Prof. Lisa Wagels presents her research on social cognition from the perspective of neuroscience: Making social cognition (in the brain) measurable – how does that work?
In recent years, neuroscience has become increasingly interested in emotions and social cognition, and is increasingly attempting to map “real” interactions, such as cooperative work, competitive situations, or conflicts. Here, it is no longer just the brain function of a single person that is important; rather, ways must be found to learn how people react to each other and what role brain-to-brain communication plays in this. A modern and technically challenging method that can be used for this purpose is “fMRI hyperscanning.”
Background:
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can be used to visualize changes in brain activity. Hyperscanning means that not only the reactions of one person's brain are recorded, but also the reactions of the brain of an interaction partner at the same time. A simultaneous fMRI measurement is performed while two people interact, for example, in a computer task. Brain function patterns that emerge from the responses of both brains can then be used to characterize the interaction and its course.
In her presentation on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Prof. Lisa Wagels will use a study on social interaction between siblings to show how interactive processes and brain function patterns change in situations of cooperation, conflict, and competition, and how characteristics of the sibling relationship can influence these processes.
