10. Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis Forschung - Apply now!

The German Sustainability Award for Research is awarded by the Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e.V. together with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It recognises outstanding sustainability-related research achievements in Germany. This year, the award focuses on adaptation to climate change and dealing with extreme weather events in cities and regions. Individual researchers or research groups can apply via an online questionnaire until 30 June 2021.

Ideas for climate-resilient cities and regions

Climate change is advancing. In addition to climate protection, climate adaptation is also an increasingly urgent task in times of advancing climate change. The increasing number and intensity of extreme weather events, such as more frequent heat waves, droughts, heavy precipitation and floods, make this clear. For this reason, adaptation to climate change and dealing with extreme weather events in cities and regions are the focus of this year's German Sustainability Award for Research.

The award is looking for completed or ongoing projects on this year's main topic. Individual researchers or research groups from German research institutions, universities and companies can enter the competition from now until 30 June 2021; cooperation at EU or international level is welcome. The projects should not have been completed for longer than 24 months. Ongoing projects can be submitted if (initial) results and their practical implementation are clearly visible.

Participation is via an online questionnaire and is possible until 30 June 2021. All information can be found on the website.

In Germany, climate change is hitting a highly developed and complex infrastructure as well as vulnerable groups in particular, such as children, the elderly and the sick, who can be sensitively affected by extreme weather. Therefore, it is time to prepare ourselves as a society for the climatic changes. Wanted are application-oriented projects that present solutions for adapting to climate change in cities and regions and thus meet the challenges of climate change through precautionary action. We are looking for sustainable approaches that mitigate risks, make our living spaces resilient and integrate climate adaptation aspects into sustainable development. In particular, there is great potential in the cooperation of different disciplines.

Award ceremony at the 14th German Sustainability Day

After a jury of experts has selected the three finalists, they will be presented in autumn 2021 as part of a public voting. The public will decide on the winning team, which will be awarded the German Sustainability Award for Research at the 14th German Sustainability Day on 3 December 2021.
