Jülich Expertise: Nitrate in the Groundwater
Jülich, 25 November 2015 – Too much nitrate in the groundwater is what the European Commission has accused Germany of. It says the country is violating applicable EU directives. How bad exactly is the nitrate pollution of German groundwaters and surface waters? This is what Jülich scientist Prof. Frank Wendland wants to find out together with his colleagues from the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere. "We calculate, for example, how much nitrate from agriculture leaches into the groundwater. We also model how long the substance stays there and to where it is transported."
