", Jun.-Prof. Dr. Nathalie Sick from Jülich's Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK) interviewed the chancellor on the topic of battery research. The 34-year-old scientist wanted to hear from Dr. Merkel how politics can help to improve the transfer of results from battery research to practical applications. Another question addressed the issue of an appropriate gender balance in male-dominated fields of work. “What qualities do women like us need in order to provide good role models for girls and women?”, Sick asked the chancellor.Nathalie Sick heads the working group on Innovation and Technology Management for Energy Storage Technologies at the Helmholtz Institute Münster (HI MS) – a branch office of Forschungszentrum Jülich. HI MS pools the expertise of Forschungszentrum Jülich, RWTH Aachen University, and the University of Münster in battery research.
Research at HI MS focuses on the electrolyte – a central component in every battery regulating the internal chemical processes. As an ion conductor, this central component ensures current can flow between the negative and positive poles. The electrolyte properties therefore determine essential features such as the performance, safety, and lifetime of a battery.
