Energiewende: Outlining the Transition to Hydrogen

Jülich, 9 March 2017 – The transition to fuel cell cars will help significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The hydrogen infrastructure required for this transition could be the key to increasingly replacing fossil energy carriers with renewable energies in future. Scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich estimate that investments totalling € 61 billion are required to establish the complete infrastructure for passenger car transport in Germany. By comparison, over a period of 40 years, annual expenditure for this measure would be lower than current annual investments in the German natural gas grid. The Jülich researchers will be present at the International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (IRES 2017), which takes place from 14 to 16 March in Düsseldorf.
