High-Energy Solid-State Battery
Solid-state battery achieves high energy density with lithium anode and hybrid electrolyte
Jülich, 26 February 2019 – Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Münster have presented a new solid-state battery featuring an anode made of pure lithium. Lithium is considered an ideal electrode material which can help achieve extremely high energy densities. The metal is very reactive, which previously precluded its use as an anode material. This has now been made possible by means of two additional layers of a novel polymer. These layers protect the battery’s ceramic electrolyte and prevent destructive metal deposits. This worked so well in laboratory tests that the cells lost hardly any capacity over hundreds of charging cycles.
