New Institute Division Explores Silicon-Air Batteries

Work at the recently founded institute division of the Institute of Energy and Climate Research concentrates on the fundamentals of new electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems

Jülich, 1 October 2012 – Silicon does not only provide the basis for computer chips. It is also a promising material for future high-performance energy storage systems. In the long term, silicon-air batteries could replace lithium-ion batteries in various applications. They are regarded as particularly environmentally friendly, highly efficient and insensitive to external influences. The institute division "Fundamental Electrochemistry" recently established at Jülich will further refine the battery materials in order to develop this novel type of battery to market maturity.
