An algorithm is a series of clearly defined steps to solve a problem. Not only computer programmes, but also cooking recipes or building instructions work according to this principle.
Algorithms in everyday life
Traffic
Navigation systems calculate the shortest or fastest route to a destination.
Internet
Google, Facebook and the like provide us with customised search results, purchase recommendations and news – based on our previous activities.
Financial world
Algorithms help with online banking, for example by monitoring money transfers and sounding alarm in the event of unusual transactions.
More transparency
Algorithms make facilitate processes. However, it is not always clear where and how algorithms are used. Experts call for more transparency and clear rules in this respect.
What is Jülich doing?
Jülich uses algorithms in all areas of research. Scientists also optimise and develop algorithms, for example for new questions or for working with supercomputers.
