Deadline: November 17, 2025

Brief description of the programme

The DAAD supports research stays abroad as part of doctoral studies in Germany.  The funding duration ranges from a minimum of 1 month to a maximum of 12 months.

What is funded

The program funds research projects abroad in connection with doctoral studies at a German university. Research stays can take place at universities, non-university research institutions, or, in some cases, as independent research in archives or through fieldwork without institutional affiliation in the host country.

If required, the stay abroad can be flexibly divided between:

  • several host institutions in one country,
  • several countries,
  • several periods of time.

Application Requirements (excerpt):

  • Applicants must be accepted as doctoral candidates at a German university at the time of application. If formal acceptance is still pending, proof of the dissertation topic allocation is sufficient.
  • The doctoral program must not have started more than three years prior to the application, unless special circumstances apply.

Application Deadline

  • Application Period: October 1 - November 17, 2025
  • Selection Date: February 2026
  • Scholarship Start: May 1, 2026
