Or: How light shows us what is happening on the surface. Light can do much more than just make things visible – it can reveal how matter is structured at its core. When light hits a surface, electrons are released, providing us with information about the structure and electronic properties of the molecules located there. Using photoemission orbital tomography (POT), it is even possible to reconstruct the shapes of the molecular orbitals – essentially portraits of the electron shells. This provides a fascinating view of molecules in the spotlight.
