What is presented?

The use of plant-based raw materials such as wood or fibers plays an important role in a sustainable economy. However, plants vary greatly depending on their type and cultivation, which makes them difficult to process. Therefore, precise knowledge of how the structure of the plant-based raw material relates to the processing methods is required, and new (alternative) plants and robust processes may be needed to convert plant-based raw materials into sustainable products. Various examples are used to show how alternative plants can replace conventional ones as raw materials for materials such as pulp and how new chemical and biological processes can convert such raw materials into products such as textiles and paper.

Background:

At IBG-2, we develop biomass production systems in close cooperation with biomass conversion and downstream processes in biorefineries. In addition to optimizing the quality and yield of plant biomass, we strive to minimize competition for land and resources as well as the impact on the environment. The targeted development of innovative, biomass-based products creates new opportunities for novel value-added networks for a sustainable bioeconomy. While alternative biomass crops have been cultivated mainly for bioenergy purposes in recent decades, we focus on the development of novel, value-added products in combination with targeted circular processes in systemic approaches that encompass production, conversion, and recycling.
