The lecture will be held in German.

Research into the controlled use of nuclear fusion for energy generation has been ongoing since the 1950s. Despite tremendous advances in our understanding of physics and the successful development and optimization of corresponding devices, especially for magnetic confinement, there is still no energy-generating power plant. However, it can be observed that many private companies have emerged in recent years, some of which, building on existing knowledge, have announced the construction of a fusion reactor in the next decade. To date, these companies have raised approximately US$10 billion in venture capital. The lecture will explain the fundamentals of nuclear fusion and briefly outline the historical development of fusion research before introducing a selection of these startups. The work of IFN-1 in materials research and development will be briefly presented and put into context. The lecture concludes with some conclusions and an attempt to provide an outlook on future developments.

Background:

The Institute of Fusion Energy and Nuclear Waste Management - Plasma Physics (IFN-1) conducts a research and development program on plasma-wall interaction and materials research for fusion devices. Both scientific tasks and project work aim to create the conditions for a burning fusion plasma.
