The lecture will be held in German.
What is presented?
Together with scientists from all over Europe, researchers at IBG-1 and IMET are working to harness microorganisms as allies in the fight against man-made environmental pollution. Often, they don't even have to look in exotic places to find them.
In his presentation, Stephan Thies from IBG-1 introduces microscopic helpers found on Borkum and in Würselen. He shares the latest insights into the toolbox of bacteria that combat oil slicks or eat polyester compounds, and presents strategies for making soil bacteria hungry for plastic building blocks.
Background:
This technology has been used at Forschungszentrum Jülich for several years. Recent technical improvements have made it even more powerful: materials can be analysed more precisely and even detailed images can be generated.
In his lecture on Thursday, 25 September 2025, Dr. Sören Möller will show how the physical principles of this method work and how it is used in practice. He explains examples from various areas of research - from battery research to plasma physics, i.e. research into extremely hot gases, such as those found in nuclear fusion.
