The Bioinformatics Institute Division (IBG-4) of the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences develops and applies methods and algorithms to achieve a fundamental understanding of high-dimensional data and processes in the bioeconomy. Bioinformatics at Forschungszentrum Jülich plays a leading role at both the national and international level — particularly in the management of plant-related data, the evaluation of new genome analysis methods, and the integration, interpretation, and visualization of high-dimensional omics data in the field of bioeconomy.

Your Job:

  • Operation and administration of the server infrastructure for high-throughput data at IBG-4
  • Operation, maintenance, and further development of the backup system
  • Setup and administration of virtual and physical computer systems (Windows, Linux)
  • Support of internal network and automation systems including end devices, as well as user rights management
  • Provision of IT support services (e.g., error diagnostics, maintenance, installation)
  • Identification and specification of hardware and software requirements in coordination with specialist departments
  • Planning and execution of data backups as well as creation and maintenance of technical documentation


Your Profile:

  • Successfully completed vocational training in the IT field (e.g., IT specialist in system administration and integration), or a bachelor`s degree in computer science or a comparable qualification
  • Professional experience in IT system administration or a similar role
  • Strong knowledge in Linux and Windows operating systems, including network configuration, system administration, and user management
  • Strong cooperation and organizational skills, with a high level of initiative and willingness to learn
  • Enthusiasm for complex computing infrastructures
  • Excellent German language skills are required
  • Good English language skills

We offer you an exciting and varied role in an international and interdisciplinary working environment. The position is for a fixed term of 2 years, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund), pay groups EG 9a - 11, depending on the applicant’s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks assigned to them.
