Grímsvötn Volcano: Ash Cloud Measurements

Researchers take samples from the ash cloud

25 May 2011/Jülich/Rendsburg - Scientists from Forschungszentrum Jülich have begun to measure the ash content in the air over Schleswig-Holstein with the help of a laser technique. Measurement flights are planned. More detailed results are expected later on in the day. The measuring instrument is located near Rendsburg. The LIDAR measurements performed by the Jülich researchers yielded a value that was approximately one order of magnitude lower than the limit of 2 milligrams of volcanic ash per cubic metre of air above which a flight ban is imposed.
