Quasicrystals Made of Fullerenes

Jülich, 22 May 2017 – For about 35 years now, researchers have been fascinated by a new class of materials – quasicrystals, the discovery of which was marked by a Nobel Prize in 2011. For a long time, they were only found in ternary alloys. That is to say, metals composed of three different types of atoms. They were subsequently found in other systems, such as liquid crystals and perovskite films. Scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich have now discovered another class of quasicrystals and by using computer simulations they have explained the reasons for the special arrangement of the molecules.
